kisacchedesign > A support system for a second wooden floor in a Roman bath house. Toward the top of the frame you see the area where fire would be set. That, combined with a bellows to distribute the heat around the lower columns would help creat steam, thus creating a 1st - 3rd century sauna.
kisacchedesign > This is view of the Roman Scythopolis, which was the largest of the 10 cities of the Decapolis, a league of ten hellinized cities. This is the only one in modern-day Israel. The other 9 are just across the border in Jordan.

This view was taken from the top of a "tell," which is a very large hill which is not a natural hill. It is actually 20-25 civilizations superimposed upon one another. Although I think I'm in pretty good shape, I must say I was quite winded climbing all the way up here.

This site goes all the way back to the 4th millennium BC. It was once an Egyptian Administrative Center, then a Canaanite city, then an Israelite city, then a Hellenistic city (Scythopolis), then a Roman city, then destroyed, and then built over as a small Crusader fortress, and finally an Islamic village.

Biblical References:
Joshua 17:11, 16: This was a Canaanite city which was not captured immediately by the Israelite conquest of the land. However, it would eventually be alloted to the tribe of Manasseh. It became an entirely Israelite city in the time of Solomon.

1 Samuel 31:9: King Saul, after falling on his own sword after defeat in battle, had his head cut off by the Philistines and his body and the bodies of his sons were hung from the city walls here.
